St. John College

Founded by Lady Margaret Beaufort in 1511, mother of King Henry VII, is Cambridge's third largest college. The first Court was built between 1511-16, Second Court 1599-1601, and a new Library building by John Williams, in 1624-26.

The college has a chapel, built in 19th century, a stained glass windows that depict scenes of the life of Christ St John is always shown in deep red and green. In the New Court across the river is the Bridge of Sighs and this connects the new court to the third court.

The Bridge of Sighs was designed by Henry Hutchinson in 1827 and inspired by the famous bridge in Venice, presumably built in 1831 along with New Court.
