Birmingham Botanical Gardens & GlasshousesThe Birmingham Botanical Gardens were opened in 1832 and designed by John Claudius Loudon, a leading garden planner, horticultural journalist and publisher. Originally created to encourage the study of plants which were bought from the new world, The Botanical Gardens today is a research and conservation center of many species of plants. It features Glasshouses to simulate the climate zones of the world. In the main gardens there is the Loudon Terrace, the first place to view the main sweep of the Gardens. Past the terrace is the main lawn, acting as a natural amphitheatre and suntrap, plus there is the cottage and garden offering up a mish mash of architectural styles and traditional country cottage gardens of the last century. One of the main attractions of the garden are the glasshouses, created to simulated tropical, subtropical, Mediterranean and arid climate zones. The Tropical House has the most varied collection of diverse plants, offering a hot, humid atmosphere to simulate the conditions of the lowland equatorial regions of the tropics.
