City Art Gallery

Founded in 1888and refurnished in the early 1980s, Leeds City Art Gallery is home of an impressive collection of art dating back to around 1820. The Gallery's 20th century British collection was hailed by the Times as "probably the best collection of 20th century British art outside London". Spread over three floors the Gallery boasts famous Victorian paintings, a small collection of French Post-Impressionist paintings, contemporary British art and a selection of works on paper drawn from the important collection of prints, watercolours and drawings.

Currently the gallery is undergoing further changes, including the refurbishment of the Victorian tiled hall which connects the Gallery to the Central Library.

Throughout the year a series of events and exhibitions, temporary and artist-led workshops introduce visitors to the exciting use of materials and new processes employed by artists today.

The Gallery also houses the Craft Shop and Design Gallery, one of the most prestigious retail outlets for contemporary craft in the North of England.
